Dr Christian Pizzaro, Co-Director for the Nemours Children’s Cardiac Center at Nemours Children’s Hospital, and Rob and Olivia Fritz, who have experienced its care, discussed the renowned center at 25.
Dr. Pizzaro discussed the strides made in children’s cardiology over the past decades, from in utero diagnosis and treatment to non-invasive procedures to treat even the most complicated cases. We talked about the Center’s commitment to research and to going ‘Well Beyond Medicine’ – a holistic approach that treats the entire family, looking at the social, economic, behavioral and environmental factors that impact children’s health. He noted that they will present this concept at the upcoming World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. Rob and Olivia discussed their journey with Nemours, after Rob suffered a stroke Oliva had their children tested at Nemours for possible genetic problems. They not only discovered their youngest son, Trevor had a heart malfunction, when the Nemours doctors suggested looking at Rob, he had the same defect. Both father and son were treated at Nemours, making Rob one of the oldest ‘kids’ to enjoy Child Life and the specialty care of Nemours.
We also discussed their Cardiac Center charity golf tournament on September 25 at the duPont Country Club. Bo Kimble’s 44 For Life Foundation is partnering with them to raffle off the chance to join his foursome at the event.
