From the American Cancer Society, Community Development Managers Sean Kelly and Carly Timmons discussed their upcoming events, the three Relay for Life walks and a Mother’s day fundraiser for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer at Pennswood Vineyards. We started our conversation with the mission of the American Cancer Society, to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer. They discussed the millions raised and spent here in the Delaware Valley in research projects, and their work to connect patients with the best treatment possible. They both spoke about the importance of following their guidelines for screenings, and emphasized the need for a healthy lifestyle with good eating habits and exercise. Sean then discussed the three Relay For Life events, June 1 in Cecil County, Maryland and Middletown, DE, and June 8 in central Delaware. He told us how to create a team for the 12 – 14 hour walk, and described the fun events that will go on around the walkers. He spoke about the luminaries you can sponsor for a loved one that will ring the track at each event. Carly discussed breast cancer, the number 1 cancer to afflict women after skin cancer, she spoke about screening and how early detection is key. We then discussed the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k Race and Walk to raise funds and awareness about the disease. She described the fun and music that will entertain the participants and cheering crowds. Coming up Mother’s Day, there will be a Making Strides fundraiser at Pennswoods Winery and Vineyards, with music and a glass of wine for participants! Shane mentioned another October campaign, Real Men Wear Pink, a men’s fundraiser for breast cancer, where men wear pink for the month.
