Dan Atkins, Executive Director of Community Legal Aid Society, discussed the work the Combined Campaign for Justice does, how the 36 attorneys at the three non-profit legal aid societies, the Community Legal Aid Society, the Delaware Volunteer Legal Services and the Legal Services of Corporation of Delaware have delivered an economic return of $7.23 for every dollar spent; how there is one attorney for every 8,333 low income people in need. He described how they serve low-income and vulnerable people – the elderly, immigrants, the handicapped, etc. with representation in cases of public benefits, fair housing, discrimination, employment and domestic issues, including violence. He noted their work results in cost savings in lost wages and public assistance and eases the burden on the court system, the benefits go beyond the individual receiving assistance.
