Greg Munson, Director of Development and Marketing for the Delaware Humane Association, discussed the statewide agency, its mission to ‘make friends for life’ by finding homes for cats and dogs abandoned or voluntarily surrendered, He also discussed their other services, including a low cost spay/neuter clinic, dog licenses and a pet food pantry. The DE Humane Association also works with a local healthcare provider to offer a monthly clinic, 1 Health Clinic, where, thanks to a grant from PetSmart, owners can get their blood pressure and other simple screenings as a vet screens their pet! He described their work with other care providers, some who perform Trap/Neuter/Release with feral cats, shelters needed to evacuate pets before floods or fire, shelters who work with particular breeds. Greg asked for support for the DHA centers, including money and supply donations, they can always use cleaning products, food, milk replacement, litter, even toys and bedding. Volunteers are needed to clean, play with the pets and walk the dogs and foster homes are in real need for animals who need care after medical procedures, bottle feeding or socializing after removal from abusive situations. Greg told about one his recent ‘foster failures’ – former Vice President Joe Biden, who gave up fostering and adopted the Sheppard puppy he was caring for. He talked about working with families and individuals who must surrender a pet, how they provide a ‘judgement free’ environment to help make the loss easier, for adoptions he described how they work with you to make the best match for you and your new friend.
If you are interested in a dog or cat ‘friend for life’ you can visit the DHA website to see profiles on the pets – each named – available for adoption and plan a visit to meet the pet in a home-like environment. Finally, he discussed the upcoming December 8th and 9th Mega Adoption event sponsored by the local ASPCA, bringing multiple shelters together at the Delaware Fairgrounds to offer same day adoptions with fees waived.
