Jennifer Sciolla, Senior Director of Child and Family Social Services at Nemours Children’s Hospital, discussed their programming for patients, parents and siblings, from art and pet therapy, schoolwork, to the healing garden and family kitchen, through end-of-life counseling and palliative care.
She discussed the staff who deliver these special services, while art and music therapy can help their goal of allowing kid ‘to just be kids’ – they also help with communication between the patient and caregiver. Allowing siblings to participate in activities – with the patient and on their own – keeps them from feeling excluded. Pastoral and palliative care helps families with difficult conversations and decisions and lets families share quality time and make memories.
We noted that these important programs are not covered by insurance, they are supported through donations including the fund raised through the WJBR Help Our Kids Radiothon September 22 and 23rd!
