Jennifer Lopez Was ‘Manhandled’ In A Previous Relationship
Jennifer Lopez is opening up about past experiences from which she had to move on in her new documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told. According to People magazine, the actress and singer was discussing filming scenes for her new song “Rebound.” In the scene, Lopez and a love interest in the film perform a choreographed dance routine, suggesting domestic violence in a toxic relationship. After filming the dance routine, Lopez said, “I’m glad that one’s behind us.” Later, she gets emotional during a car ride when she’s asked about shooting that particular storyline.
The 54-year-old mother of two stated, “Being thrown around and manhandled like that is not fun.” Though she clarifies she was “never” in a relationship where she got “beat up,” she says she has “definitely been manhandled and a couple of other unsavory things…rough…disrespectful.” In the next scene of the Amazon Prime Video doc, Lopez is at home on the phone with her longtime friend and producing partner, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, whom she tells of the emotional toll the vulnerable project has taken on her.
Goldsmith-Thomas tells the “All I Have” singer that her personal journey will relate to women who have been and are abused. “You’re talking about how we accept less than we deserve,” she tells J-Lo. Though the triple threat doesn’t name who “manhandled” her, the documentary film sees her open up about her experiences in love and dating and illustrates her journey to self-love. Earlier in the doc, Lopez said she was told she was loved by people who “didn’t do things that were kind of in line with the word love.”

Some of Lopez’s wise words in the documentary include her saying when you are in uncomfortable and painful situations, “You have to hit rock bottom,” so you can realize you don’t want that anymore. She recalled a therapist asked her, “‘What if this was your daughter? What would you do?’ And it was so clear. I was like, I’d tell her, ‘Get the f— out of here, never look back.'” But for herself, things were much more complicated, and her judgment was clouded.
The Greatest Love Story Never Told and the musical film This Is Me … Now: A Love Story are both streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
