Beyoncé, born Beyonce Giselle Knowles born on September 4, 1981, in Houston, Texas, is a living legend. Before she became the most-awarded female artist of all time and a member of Destiny’s Child, she had humble beginnings in her native Texas. Beyoncé’s parents are Tina and Mathew Knowles. Tina is a fashion designer and Mathew was Destiny’s Child’s manager. Beyonce’s younger sister, Solange Knowles, is also a singer and a former backup dancer for Destiny’s Child. Solange and Beyoncé are the first sisters to have both had number one solo albums.
Beyoncé enrolled in dance classes as a kid, but it was her singing that really caught the attention of dance instructor Darlette Johnson. Darlette was humming a song that Bey finished, able to hit the high-pitched notes. At age seven, she continued her interest in music and performing after winning a school talent show singing John Lennon’s “Imagine.” When Beyoncé was eight, she was placed in an all-girl group called Girl’s Tyme with three other girls. After a rough start of failures in the talent show Star Search, lots of lost money and relocation, her parents separating, and being cut from Atlanta Records, the group’s future was looking bleak. However, by 1996, the girls began recording their debut album under an agreement with Sony Music, the Knowles family reunited, and shortly after, the group got a contract with Columbia Records.
The group changed their name to Destiny’s Child that year, based upon a passage in the Book of Isaiah. They released their major label debut song “Killing Time” on the soundtrack to 1997’s Men in Black. In November, Destiny’s Child released their debut single and first major hit, “No, No, No.” They released their self-titled debut album in February 1998, establishing the group as viable hitmakers. Beyoncé’s first hit outside the group was a feature on Jay-Z’s song “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” which was released in October 2002. Fast-forward to three years later, and Destiny’s Child announced they would disband. The group has sold 60 million records worldwide.
Since then, Beyoncé put out seven solo albums, with her latest, Renaissance released in 2022. Having sold over 200 million records worldwide, she is one of the best-selling artists of all time. Now, Beyoncé’s Europe and North American Renaissance World Tour is in full swing and comes to North America in July. Take a look below at our curated list of items you must take with you.
