Allen Iverson officially launched his first memoir, Misunderstood, on Tuesday, Oct. 7, published by Simon & Schuster. The book offers an in-depth look at his journey from childhood to NBA stardom.

Iverson explained that the title reflects his frustration with stereotypes, adding, “You think you know, but you have no idea.”

The memoir details Iverson's upbringing in poverty and violence in Hampton, Virginia. It explores the influence of his mother and his early struggles, including a wrongful conviction that threatened his future.

Drafted No. 1 overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996, Iverson was named Rookie of the Year, 2001 MVP, and an 11-time All-Star. His crossover, cornrows, and streetwear style rebuffed NBA leadership but helped personify athlete individuality.

The memoir begins with Iverson's infamous 2002 press conference, where he vented, “We're talking about practice.” He frames that episode as a moment of frustration connected with legal issues and personal grief.

Iverson admits to his struggles with alcohol addiction and personal tragedies that weighed heavily on him during his playing days. In an interview with CBS Mornings, he revealed he's been sober for six months, saying it was “one of my best decisions that I ever made in my life.”

Iverson also appeared on The Stephen A. Smith Show  to address sobriety.

Misunderstood is available in hardcover and digital formats through multiple retailers, with signed copies and tour tickets offered on the publisher's website.

Iverson began his promotional tour for the book in New York on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Philadelphia is one of the planned stops.
