Work has begun at the site of a huge 64,000-square-foot Weis Markets store in Middletown, Delaware. This is the first time the company has built a store from scratch in the state.
The new grocery store will be the centerpiece of a massive 280,000-square-foot shopping center, planning to open between fall 2025 and spring 2026. It adds to the company's network of 197 stores spread across seven states.
Customers at the Middletown location will have access to fresh food departments, complete grocery selections, an in-store pharmacy, and a gas station. The store is part of the developing Bayberry Town Center.
Weis Markets operates stores across Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and West Virginia. They plan to open six new stores in 2025.
The company is growing through both new buildings and buying existing stores. They recently bought two Sunnyway Foods stores in Pennsylvania.
A big expansion happened in 2018 when Weis bought 38 Food Lion stores across three states, greatly increasing their presence in the market.
The Delaware project builds on local relationships. Working with nearby farmers ensures stores carry local produce, meats, and dairy.
Their own brands play a big role in their business, with over 3,000 products carrying the Weis name and giving customers more options.
When it opens, the store will feature products from local farms and producers, keeping with their focus on supporting the community.
Construction crews have already started work on the site, adding to Middletown's expanding commercial district.
