Visiting a decades old mansion or historic home can really make for an exciting getaway, and Delaware has some unique ones. When it comes to great travel destinations, visiting a mansion or historic home isn't always the first thing that comes to mind. Walking into a mansion from yesteryear is really like taking a step back in time. It's a thrilling experience, and you really feel like a piece of history when you're visiting an old mansion.

Delaware Spot Honors History

The travel experts at Explore Delaware have put together a tally of the most historic homes in the state. They make a good point that "each location tells a rich legacy that may be decades or even centuries old." Some of these spots are museums, while others are simply historic homes or mansions. What they all have in common is that they're all important to Delaware's history as a state and offer some thrilling views.

One of their favorite places is the Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, located at 5105 Kennett Pk (Rt 52) in Wilmington. "This regal estate is home to the nation's premier collection of American antiques," they explain in the piece.

Not only is the historic home a beautiful one to tour and visit, but this place also has fantastic gardens. Winterthur offers 1,000 acres of protected meadows, woodlands, ponds, and waterways." The museum's official website notes that, "The 60-acre garden, designed by du Pont, is among America’s best, with magnificent plantings and massive displays of color throughout the year." So, it's really known for its gardens, as well as the museum itself.

Note that Winterthur is closed to the public from January 6 through March 1, but the nice thing is that members can keep enjoying daily dawn to dusk access to the grounds to explore and take in the beauty. During the season, you can take guided tours through the museum.
