Former Math Teacher Matthew Meyer Takes Office as Delaware’s 76th Governor
At Delaware State University’s William B. DeLauder Theatre, Matthew S. Meyer was sworn in as Delaware’s 76th governor on January 21, 2025.
Meyer moves into his position after leading New Castle County for eight years. His unique journey to politics included teaching math in D.C. schools and serving overseas as a diplomat.
As county executive, he helped Delaware lead the way in COVID-19 response. His program made the state the first to distribute free saliva tests, getting 300,000 kits to residents.
During his leadership, the NCC Hope Center launched, providing 192 rooms for homeless individuals. This facility now helps Delawareans who are working to rebuild their lives.
Meyer’s service in Mosul, Iraq was a defining part of his career. He worked alongside U.S. Army units during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn, creating diplomatic connections in a war zone.
As a teacher, he touched lives both at home and abroad. After three years teaching in Washington D.C. schools, he came back to teach at Wilmington’s Prestige Academy.
His vision for Delaware focuses on education and healthcare. He plans to offer universal pre-K, end student hunger in schools, and clear medical debt for state residents.
Following a close race against Republican Mike Ramone in 2024, Meyer now leads Delaware forward. He won after successfully managing Delaware’s largest county.
His time as New Castle County executive shows his priorities. Through initiatives like the Hope Center, he demonstrated his commitment to helping those in need.
Today begins a new chapter in state leadership. Meyer brings a diverse background – from teaching math to diplomatic work in war zones to county management – to his role guiding Delaware’s future.
