Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Finally Settle, Thanks to His Girlfriend
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Hollywood’s former power couple, are now officially divorced after eight long years of legal battle over their assets, finances, child custody, and more. Jolie’s lawyer James Simon of Hersh Mannis told CNN, “More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”
But why did the divorce proceedings take this long?
Legal Battles
The couple infamously met on the set of their 2005 film Mr. & Mrs. Smith and fell in love while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston. Pitt divorced Aniston and began a relationship with Jolie afterwards. They have been together since 2005, got married in 2014 and in September 2016, Jolie filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences.
The couple’s divorce took so long because of several factors such as:
- Shared assets: One of the most talked about shared assets between the former couple is their Château Miraval, a winery in France. In 2022, Pitt sued Jolie because she sold her shares of the Château without his consent. According to Business Insider, the lawsuit states, “She sold her interest with the knowledge and intention that Shefler and his affiliates would seek to control the business to which Pitt had devoted himself and to undermine Pitt’s investment in Miraval.” He said they have an agreement that neither one can sell their shares without the other’s consent. Jolie countersued and said there was no such agreement.
- FBI investigations: Before filing for divorce, Jolie alleged that an intoxicated Pitt got violent while they were on board a private plane. The investigation into this case also contributed to the prolonged divorce proceedings.
- Child custody: The proceedings dragged on so long that some of the ex-couple’s children are now over 18, meaning they no longer need a custody agreement. Their children, including their eldest biological daughter Shiloh, legally had her last name changed from Jolie-Pitt to Jolie, while Zahara and Vivienne also stopped using “Pitt,” according to Harpers Bazaar.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Divorce
According to Daily Mail, it was Brad Pitt’s girlfriend since 2022, Ines de Ramon who influenced the actor to settle and finalize the divorce. The source, who is close to the actor, said, “He was influenced by Ines to finally settle. Ines wants to have a life together — possibly with children in the future — without the albatross that was the eight-year War of the Roses.”
Pitt also seemed to be eager to marry de Ramon. The source also said, “It is time and 2025 is going to be the moment he will get engaged to her.”
