Rashida Jones Pays Tribute to ‘Genius’ Quincy Jones
Rashida Jones penned a moving tribute to her father, Quincy Jones, who died on November 3 at age 91.
In a post to Instagram, Rashida shared a photo of her father holding her as a baby. She captioned the photo, “My dad was nocturnal his whole adult life. He kept ‘jazz hours’ starting in high school and never looked back. When I was little, I would wake up in the middle of the night to search for him. Undoubtedly, he would be somewhere in the house, composing (old school, with a pen and sheet music).”
Rashida continued, “He would never send me back to bed. He would smile and bring me into his arms while he continued to work…there was no safer place in the world for me.”
Rightfully, she added, “He was a giant. An icon. A culture shifter. A genius. All accurate descriptions of my father but his music (and ALL of his work) was a channel for his love. He WAS love. He made everyone he ever met feel loved and seen. That’s his legacy.”
Rashida closed by saying, “I was fortunate enough to experience this love in close proximity. I’ll miss his hugs and kisses and unconditional devotion and advice. Daddy, it is an honor to be your daughter. Your love lives forever.”
A whole host of people have paid tribute to Quincy Jones since his death earlier this week. Stevie Wonder shared a beautiful tribute with Rolling Stone. Wonder said, in part, “Losing Quincy is more than heartbreaking. As we lose great people in various genres of music, I know the orchestra in that wonderful world beyond here — musicians, singers, dancers, actors, actresses, producers, all the people that we’ve met on this journey — is something incredible, far more than we can even imagine. It’s just wonderful to have what we have to motivate young people to understand the greatness of music and what it can do. I’m just disappointed that he wasn’t here for longer.”
Will Smith took to Instagram to honor Quincy Jones, who produced the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Smith wrote, “Quincy Jones is the true definition of a Mentor, a Father and a Friend. He pointed me toward the greatest parts of myself. He defended me. He nurtured me. He encouraged me. He inspired me. He checked me when he needed to. He let me use his wings until mine were strong enough to fly.”
