New Castle Airport Most Likely To Experience Flight Delays In The US
Weather has been a cause for flight delays and cancelations all summer long this year. While some delays are out of the hands of the airlines, there are some that can be avoided.
The crew at PlanetWare went on a search to find the airports across the US with the shortest security wait times and the most on-time flights.
US Airports
On average, the wait time across all US airports is just about 10 minutes and 81% of US flights have been on time since 2014. That’s a pretty good percentage, if you ask me. Hawaii and Illinois airport travelers can expect longer wait times of between 15-17 minutes. Connecticut and Mississippi airport travelers should expect a shorter wait time that average, of about 3 minutes or so. Flights leaving Hawaii, Alaska and Montana are the likely to be on time about 86% of the time. The airport in Honolulu (HNL) has both the longest average wait time and more on time flights than any other airport in the US since 2014. That’s ironic. Chicago Midway in Illinois has more reported flight delays of about 23% and cancelations of about 6% of the time, more than any other major airport in the US, since 2014.
New Castle Airport
- Flights leaving Delaware (32.1%), New Jersey (21.8%), and Maryland (20.6%) are the most likely to experience delays.
- New Castle Airport has reported more flight delays than any other U.S. airport over the past 10 years (34.0%).
What’s the cause of these long wait times and delays at New Castle Airport? Could be the growing problem with staffing shortages. Lack of employees is one of the major causes for these delays.

Methodology
To complete the study, PlanetWare used data from iFly to determine security wait times for over 200 airports across the country. iFly monitors data on flight volume and when TSA is staffed at certain capacities to determine the estimated wait time by hour. To find an average, they collected the estimated wait time from 11am-12pm for each airport across 7 days to find the highest average wait times for each location. Of those airports, only 171 provided enough data for a sufficient sample to be included in this study. Read the full study here.
