City oF Newark approves 190-unit student housing complex
https://newarkde.gov/DocumentCenter/View/17042/65-S-Chapel-Street-Plans?bidId=The University of Delaware has had a lot to celebrate recently. They were ranked on the list of Top Schools Globally which may contribute in the coming years to an increase in applications. To accommodate a growing student body, the City of Newark has just approved a 190-unit complex for student housing.
A developer received approval Monday night to build a six-story, 190-unit student apartment complex that will span an entire block from Haines Street to South Chapel Street.
Continental Court and University Commons are the existing student housing complexes which will be torn down. In their place, The Continental, a six-story apartment building will run nearly the entire length of the 4.7-acre property, which is behind Calvary Baptist Church and the 7-Eleven.
The building will include a 511-space internal parking garage. The garage will be surrounded by apartment units, meaning it will not be visible from the street.
There will also be an internal courtyard to provide light and ventilation to interior apartments.
Sounds like quite the upgrade!
City reps debated the affordability of the units in the complex and whether or not it would be a beneficial project. Some argued that students would not be able to afford to live there.
Others argued that this project avoids putting another large building on Main Street and protects residential neighborhoods from becoming overrun with students.
