Popular Newark Jeweler Closing After 36 Years In Business
It happens to the best of them. We love our local businesses but every now and then, one of them ends up having to close their doors. The same is true for one popular Newark Jeweler closing after 36 years in business in Delaware.
Located on Elkton Rd near Acme and Home Depot, Andrew Gallagher Jeweler is set to close by the end of July.
Gallagher Jeweler History
Andrew Gallagher III (Andy) has been running the family jewelry business that has been open for more than 70 years. The store was started by Andy’s father, Andrew F. Gallagher Jr.
When Andrew returned from fighting in the Korean war, he became one of most prized and dependable jewelers in Delaware.
He owned several stores in various locations throughout New Castle County until he retired in 1989.
The Family Business
Having attended Bowman Technical School in Lancaster to study jewelry repair, he went on to work for his dad and other jewelers in the area.
In 1987, Andy opened his own store in College Square Shopping Center.
After 11 years in that location, he moved the storefront to its current location in Suburban Shopping Center.
Andy has kept up the family tradition of offering quality merchandise and personalized service.
Closing Their Doors
Andy will be retiring on July 22nd, but he is grateful to the community for their business. “I can’t thank Newark enough for their loyalty and their trust,” Gallagher said. “I’d like to thank the community for 36 years.”
Michael Gallagher Jewelers in Fox Run Shopping Center in Bear is run by Andrew’s brother, but the two shops are not affiliated.
With the popular Newark Jeweler closing, this will leave the storefront vacant until another business decides to take over.
We wish Andy the best in his retirement!
