Best And Worst Times To Travel In Delaware For 4th of July Weekend

Gas prices across the state have been dropping as of late.  I know I’ve noticed it in Wilmington, for sure.

Lucky for those of us who have travel plans for the 4th of July Holiday, it’s coming at the perfect time.  But along with that also means that there will be TONS of people on the roads in the coming days.

GasBuddy reports that the national average for a gallon of gas will be around $3.49 per gallon as we approach the 4th.  How does that compare to last year?  This same time in 2022, we were seeing an average of $4.79.  That’s a HUGE drop year over year.

So, how does Delaware fare at the pump?  Right now, gas prices in Middletown are around $3.17 a gallon and up to $3.28 in Newark.  Of course, we all know the further you drive off the beaten path, the lower the prices might be.

AAA Reports that 50 Million Americans will travel for July 4th,

Of those 50 million, 85% of those travelers will be on the roadways.  “We’ve never projected travel numbers this high for Independence Day weekend,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel.

Leaving as early as you can seems to be the best plan of action.  If you’re a frequent visitor to the Delaware beaches, you know the drill.  If it was in the cards for me, I would already have my chair in the sand and a drink in hand RIGHT NOW!  Haha.  Soon enough.

• Disc Golf in Newark

  Disc golf is a fantastic outdoor activity that combines hiking with play. Delaware has a variety of places to play 18 holes in around an hour and a half to two hours. • U-pick Farms

  Have a berry good 4th of July at a number of U-pick farms in Delaware. Best of all, families can take home their harvest and enjoy delicious meals made with the freshest produce available. You can pick from late morning until dusk.

• 4th of July Fireworks

  Visit our many beaches for 4th of July fireworks.

  Due to beach replenishment, Bethany Beach’s fireworks have been postponed until Labor Day.

  In Dewey Beach, Love Seed Mama Jump will play live from the Rudder, and fireworks to begin at dusk.

  Dover‘s celebration and parade begin at 4 PM on Park Drive (between East Division and East Loockerman Street).

  In Elkton, MD, the best Fireworks viewing is at Eder Park (Elkton Little League). Fireworks are planned at dusk (rain date July 5).

  Hockessin‘s Fireworks Show is funded 100% by donations; the Hockessin community is asked to donate. Activities begin at 9 AM. Hockessin Fourth of July Celebration details. (https://hockessin4th.org/)

  Celebrations in Laurel, Delaware begin July 4 with a cornhole tournament at 5:30. The parade on Evergreen Drive starts at 7, with Fireworks set to begin at dusk.

  Lewes Features children’s activities starting at 9 AM, the Lewes Independence Boat Parade at 1:30, the Doo-Dah Parade, starting at Lloyd’s Market at five, and Fireworks at dusk.

  In Middletown, DE, Silver Lake Park will open for viewing at 6 p.m. with food for sale.

  Newark Fireworks will be held on Tuesday, July 4th at the University of Delaware Athletic Complex (605 S. College Ave., Newark). Vendors and entertainment will begin at 6 PM For more information, call the Parks & Recreation Office at 302-366-7000 or email [email protected].

  Rehoboth Beach’s Fireworks will begin at dusk on SUNDAY, July 2, weather permitting.

  Wilmington Riverfront’s celebration will feature a petting zoo, face painting, train rides, and food vendors starting at 2 PM. Fireworks are expected to start after 9 PM.
