More Wives Are Out-Earning Their Husbands
The Wall Street Journal recently released an article stating that more wives are now out-earning their husbands. Statistically, women still do make less in the workplace in comparison to men, and that deficit widens further with women of color. Men are still the breadwinners in majority of households, but the amount of women making equally as much or more than their partners has actually nearly tripled in the last 50 years, a Pew Research Center survey has reported.
The report goes on to state that 16% of opposite-sex marriages in the United States have a breadwinner wife. When the wife makes more than the husband, her median earnings are about $88,000 per year, while her husband’s are roughly $35,000. In relationships where the husband earns more, the wife makes $30,000 on average. When the husband is the breadwinner, he makes a median $96,000.
The Pew Research Center also found that women outpace men in college enrollment and graduation rates. Among people 25 years and older, women are more likely to have a four-year college degree. This degree of education is propelling women forward in the workplace.
