Hollywood Kyle and His Girlfriend Grace’s First Catch and Cook with White Clay Creek Trout
My girlfriend Grace and I celebrated Earth Day, this past Saturday April 22nd, with our first “catch and cook” with fresh trout from White Clay Creek State Park. It’s currently trout season in Delaware and the fish are certainly biting! We tried fishing White Clay this past Friday and had only one bite, using a mouse tail and meal worms. We decided to try again on Saturday and used large nightcrawler worms and salmon eggs. Grace hooked on 5 trout and reeled in 3 of them onto land.
Trout are known to have soft lips and a sporadic sense of unhooking themselves, which makes it difficult to fully reel in to your possession. You have to use a trout net. I did the netting and she did the casting and catching. We ended up with 3 rainbow trout right out of the White Clay Creek! This was the first time we ever caught fresh trout, and the first time we ever ate fish directly after catching it ourselves.
We learned to clean the fish ourselves while watching YouTube videos and did it while listening to the thunderstorm that passed through on Saturday. Grace fileted and deboned the trout while I removed the guts and innards. We ended up with 4 filets and kept a fish whole to try some different styles of cooking.
Grace doesn’t really eat fish, but I love it. So Grace had the idea to cook fried fish tacos with the filets, and then the whole fish in a Mediterranean style with lemons, parsley, and onions. It turned out excellent and had such a fresh taste, like no other before. It was very satisfying and rewarding to catch, clean and cook ourselves.
