A new report has come out showing that Delaware's healthcare system is ranked 20th nationwide.

The report shows the strengths and struggles within healthcare in the first state.

The study by UnitedHealth Group shows the troubling disparities by race and ethnicity across nearly every aspect of health and well-being in the United States.

The “American’s Health Rankings 2022 Annual Report" used 80 different measures throughout the ranking.

According to The Center Square "the report showed that Delaware has a low prevalence of frequent mental distress and a low percentage of adults who have avoided health care due to costs. The challenges the state faces include a low supply of dental providers and a high prevalence of physical inactivity."

Within the overall rankings, the report broke down different areas of healhtcare.

"The state ranked 17th in social and economic factors; 14th for physical environment; 15th in clinical care; 34th in behaviors; and 16th overall in health outcomes."

The report did highlight the strengths in Delaware's healthcare system:

  • Low prevalence of frequent mental distress
  • Low Black/white residential segregation
  • Low percentage of adults who avoided care due to cost

American’s Health Rankings 2022 Annual Report highlighted some challenges in Delaware as well:

  • High percentage of household food insecurity
  • Low supply of dental care providers
  • High prevalence of physical inactivity

The report continued:

  • Flu vaccination coverage increased 30% from 38.2% to 49.8% of adults between 2018 and 2021.
  • Excessive drinking decreased 24% from 18.9% to 14.3% of adults between 2019 and 2021.
  • Fourth grade reading proficiency decreased 22% from 32.5% to 25.3% of fourth grade public school students between 2019 and 2022.

New Hampshire had the first overall rated healthcare system while Louisiana ranked 50th overall.

Pennsylvania finished at 25th and New Jersey at 13th. Maryland was ranked 8th overall.
