Delaware Beaches To Get A Facelift
Delaware Beaches To Get A Facelift
Delawareans love their beaches. We frequent them in the summer with our families. We do our best to take care of picking up after ourselves when we visit. But what happens when weather takes over and destroys our beloved desinations? After all, mother nature is unpredictable.
Earlier this week, Gov. John Carney and other officials announced that Delaware beaches will go through a refurbish. Nourishment projects are underway in Rehoboth Beach, Dewey, Bethany, South Bethany and Fenwick Island beaches.
A $23.8 million contract was awarded to Weeks Marine of Cranford, NJ. The funds were provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District.
Nourishment of Delaware beaches will include three dune and beachfill projects. The projects are supported through the awarded funds. The funds come from a collaboration of the federal government and the state of Delaware.
The nourishment of our beaches has been a priority of the congressional delegation because it will help to protect the homes, business and local economy along the coast. Both our state officials and our coastal residents can get behind this project!
There’s something to be said for the elevation of our great state. With the Delaware being the lowest-lying state in the country, the coast is vulnerable to climate change and Gov. Carney is working to reduce those impacts.
In a statement this week, not only did he give details of the project but he thanked the members of the congressional delegation for their continued leadership on this issue.
The contract calls for dredging sand from offshore borrow sites. After that, the sand is pumped through pipes, placed on the beaches and graded into an engineered dune. These dunes are designed to reduce damage during coastal storm events.
Unfortunately, Many Delawareans have seen the effects of storms and coastal flooding. The hope is that this project will help to mitigate some of these life altering events.
As a result, many of us have been forced to renovate our homes or have even been displaced during a natural disaster. As noted, these projects should help to alleviate some of the stress that come with coastal storms and floods for us nearby homeowners.
