U.S. Marine Band Will Perform In Wilmington
Wilmington will be getting a special treat this weekend, right in time to celebrate the Phillies AND Halloween.
“The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band will perform their 2nd to last date on their regional tour at Mount Pleasant High School.
The final performance will be in Philadelphia at the Temple Performing Arts Center.
According to their website, the United States Marine Band has been offering educational clinics to school music programs located near the tour concert locations throughout their tour.
The band has been performing since 1891 under the direction of John Phillip Sousa. Sousa was a proficient musician in the late 19th century. Recognized for his talents, his father enlisted him in the Marine band at the young age of 13.
Sousa would go on to direct the band long after his discharge.
Sunday October 30th U.S. Marine Band Will Perform In Wilmington
The concert will kick off at 3pm with Sousa’s March. The march was made a tradition after President Benjamin Harrison gave the band permission to travel the country.
The band will also perform compositions from John Williams. Williams is famous for movie scores such as “Jaws”, “Star Wars”, “Indiana Jones”, and “Jurassic Park”.
The band tours every five years going to different regions of America.
They will honor regional composers including Charles Ives. Ives grew up in Connecticut. One of his pieces was influenced by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau.
The band is made up of 155 people, only half of which are on tour. The other half stays in Washington to perform for presidential events and concerts.
The band will have more than 2800 miles under their belt when they wrap this tour next week. They have visited 27 different cities in 10 states. Each concert is about 2 hours long and full of great music.
