Christina Aguilera Releases New Music Video For ‘Beautiful’
It’s been 20 years since Christina Aguilera first debuted her music video for “Beautiful,” and she’s got a new and updated message. In her original video for the song, Aguilera appears inside what appears to be an abandoned home while we see glimpses of others struggling with their body, sexuality, bullying — pretty much anyone who doesn’t fit the mold of “normal.” Watch the original video from 2002 below:
On Tuesday (October 18), the award-winning singer shared a montage video from her Stripped performances and wrote a tribute about the impact the album had on her career. “Stripped gave me the strength and freedom as an artist to tell my story the way I wanted, for the first time,” she wrote. “Thank you to all of my fighters around the world for amplifying that strength and giving me the space to continue to share myself in my truest forms. Today marks the kick off of the #20YearsOfStripped celebration, more to come.”

Yesterday, Aguilera shared an updated music video to “Beautiful” with another powerful message. She wrote on Twitter, “The original ‘Beautiful’ video set out to bring awareness and a sense of compassion in the face of criticism. It still carries an important message to remember our core values outside of what’s being fed to us…to find a sense of balance and accepting ourselves for who we are.” In the new music video, young children are seen glued to their phones, obsessed with how they are perceived online, with overlapping chatter in the background. Similarly to the original video, Xtina features people from different walks of life trying to overcome their struggles.

At the very end, a bleeding phone is shown on the ground as a message appears on the screen: “In the last 20 years, since Stripped was first released, social media has transformed our relationship with our bodies, and in turn our mental health. Research suggests that time spent on social networking sites is associated with body image issues, self-harm and disordered eating in children and teens.”
It concludes, “This needs to change.”
