Delaware bill gives tax breaks to organ donors.
A reason to make that change on your license!
There is a new bill signed into law by Governor Carney. Bill HB301 would give a 10,000 tax break to living organ donors. The bill would also give tax breaks to businesses that allow donors to take additional paid time off for the travel, housing, and recovery associated with organ donations.
Across the country, over 100,000 people are waiting for life-saving organs, 92 percent of which are waiting for kidneys. Essentially, healthy people who are in great shape could return to work after 2 weeks of making a kidney donation. It could take up to 6 weeks for the average person to recover which could possibly result in wage loss for some.
With this bill, those in recovery and those who employ them can know the legislature has their back. The hope is that this bill will help to relieve some of the anxiety that comes with making a decision such as organ donation.
Delaware joins a list of other states that provide some sort of support for those undergoing a donation or transplant procedure. Take a look at what assistance you could receive depending on where you live.
New Jersey offers up to 30 days paid leave for organ donation and 5 days for bone marrow donation while Pennsylvania offers none.
