Rehoboth Beach Purple Pearl Appraised
Rehoboth Beach purple pearl appraised!
Remember the story from mid August 2022 when Scott Overland, 37 of Phoenixville PA was dining with his family?
If not, Scott, his wife and two kids were enjoying a nice family dinner at Salt Air on Wilmington Ave.
While Scott was enjoying his littleneck clam appetizer he bit down on what he thought was a shell. After looking at the object his wife thought it was a piece of candy.
The object turned out to be a rare purple pearl! Scott said he had never heard of a pearl coming from a clam as most associate pearls with oysters.
It turned out the clam was a quahog that are known to produce porcelainlike pearls. The clam was grown by Cherrystone Aqua Farms in the Chesapeake Bay. An official from the clam company says he knows of people discovering pearls in the clams a few times a year.
Well, Scott finally got the Rehoboth Beach purple pearl appraised.
This week he traveled into Philly’s Jewelers Row….
And the value is…
$4,071 !
The pearl was appraised by Joshua Hyman, owner of Philadelphia Jewelry Appraisers.
What’s Scott plan for the pearl?
“We are definitely going to keep it at this point,” Overland says. “It’s such a special story and my daughter loves purple, so she would be sad if we gave it away. We decided it’s cool to keep around the house.”
Scott told WPVI that maybe his family will turn it into a piece of jewelry, or just display it at their home.
