providedLast night, Tuesday August 9th, Christina School District Board of Education had a meeting. All residents were welcome to attend either in person or via zoom. Some attendees might have only been there to find out what was inside the time capsule that was found in Newark a few days ago.
The time capsule was discovered by construction workers on the property of the old Drew Educational Center. The center was named after Charles Richard Drew, one of the leaders in early 20th century blood transfusion research. The building is being revamped as a brand new school, the Bancroft School. Bancroft will be the first new school in our area in decades.
When the construction crew found the time capsule, they turned it over to the district. They decided to break it open and reveal its contents in their meeting last night.
What they revealed was older than the capsule itself:
- A bible
- An edition of a Wilmington Sunday Star entertainment section. The article included information on Bob Crosby, who is the brother of the beloved Bing Crosby. There was a complete listing of TV and Radio programs as well.
- A list of the various board members and staff of the new school, complete to administrators and janitors.
- A document also said the old school cost $423,000 to build, the replacement new Bancroft School is estimated to cost about $82 million.
- A 120-yard hurdle 1st Place medal from 1929-30. Drew competed in football and track & field at Amherst College in Massachusetts, but the medal would have been after he graduated.
