New Food Pantry Opens For Wilmington Vets And Their Families
A new food pantry has opened in Wilmington for Veterans and their families. The Wilmington VA Medical Center started providing donations to food insecure vets on June 6, 2022. Since then they have provided over 60 bags of non-perishable food items. The donations come in reusable bags with 3-4 days worth of food for each recipient. The bags are individualized based on family size and dietary needs.
With so many vets in need in our immediate area, this service is not being limited to Wilmington residents. Veterans in Delaware and South Jersey are also welcome to receive donations. Any vets looking to participate must be enrolled in VA healthcare.
According to the VA website, each bag also contains a flyer that lists the national services available to Veterans with food insecurity. Other resources provided for local WVAMC include nutrition counseling, MOVE Programs, access to healthy recipes, cookbooks and other information to promote access to healthy food and educational videos.
This program runs solely on donations from the local community. You can access the Amazon Wish List if you are interested in donating or monetary donations are also accepted. Monetary donations can be mailed to WVAMC Attn: CDCE #135, 1601 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805 with a note in the memo section to designate ‘Food Pantry’.
