Brandywine Zoo Offering Free Admission All Winter Long

The Brandywine Zoo has been around for 115 years and continues to offer countless opportunities for fun and learning throughout the year.  From animal exhibits, events and other learning opportunities, such as Zoo School and camps, it’s a great way to spend a winter day in Wilmington.

What makes all of that even better?  Admission is free for everyone, now thru mid-March.  The zoo is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in January and will announce their February hours of operation soon.

The Brandywine Zoo is located in Wilmington, Delaware, along the Brandywine River in beautiful Brandywine Park.

SOME OF THE ANIMALS YOU MAY SEE ON YOUR VISIT

• Red Panda

  The Brandywine Zoo has two red pandas – Sherman and Mohu. Sherman was born at the Detroit Zoo in 2012, and Mohu was born at the Sequoia Park Zoo in 2013. Both came to live here at the Brandywine Zoo in 2018.

• Bald Eagle

  The Brandywine Zoo has two female Bald Eagles. Saphira, hatched on April 16, 2013, came to the Brandywine Zoo on December 18, 2013. She was blown out of her nest during a tornado and broke her wing, which did not heal properly.

• Black and White Ruffled Lemur

  The Brandywine Zoo has three black and white ruffed lemurs: Rees, Amor Jr. (“AJ”), and Beans. They came from the Duke Lemur Center in October 2020.
• Western Burrowing Owl

  The Brandywine Zoo has two Western Burrowing Owls. Our female Dori, was hatched at the Sacramento Zoo on April 7, 2010. She came to use from the Sedgwick Zoo on April 3, 2013. Dori has a metal band on her left leg. Our male, Gimli, was hatched on May 6, 2017 at the Knoxville Zoo and was acquired on November 11, 2019.

• Capybara

  The Brandywine Zoo’s capybara, Candace was originally a relinquished pet and was first acquired by Franklin Park Zoo. She then moved to Elmwood Park Zoo and finally came to the Brandywine Zoo on July 2, 2014. Because she was formerly a pet, we do not know her exact birth date, but we estimate it to be December 1, 2011.

• Crowned Lemur

  The Brandywine Zoo has two crowned lemurs: Kipp and Sophie. Kipp was born at the Duke Lemur Center on May 6, 2016. Sophie was born at Zoo Atlanta April 28, 2018. They arrived in October, 2020, and currently have a breeding recommendation from their conservation breeding program!
• Domestic Goats

  The Brandywine Zoo has two African Pygmy Goats, three Nigerian Dwarf Goats, and two Angora Goats. Our African Pygmy Goats, Nike and Charleigh, are a brother and sister team, born on February 19, 2011 and acquired from a local farm.

• Florida Bobcat

  Our bobcat Squeakers was born in Louisiana in 2005 and lived at the Audubon Zoo with her sister Scar before coming to the Brandywine Zoo. Squeakers blends into her habitat very well! Next time you are in the Zoo, look for Squeakers along her shelf on the left side of the habitat, behind the tall rock on the left side of her habitat, or hidden in the foliage in the middle of her habitat.

• Italian Honey Bees

  Brandywine Zoo currently has one observation hive inhabited from early May through mid-September.
• Toco Toucans

  The Brandywine Zoo is home to a pair of toco toucans, Pablo and Julio. Pablo, a female, who hatched in 2016 and came to live here in 2020 from an AZA facility in Florida, is slightly smaller than our male, Julio. Julio hatched in 2002, and came to the Brandywine Zoo from the Bronx Zoo in 2019. He has a few white scuff marks on his bill that make it possible to tell him and Pablo apart.

• Green Tree Python

  The Brandywine Zoo has one Green Tree Python. Verdi came from Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland, an AZA facility in Central Pennsylvania. He was hatched on August 3, 2014.
