Maya Angelou & Sally Ride Among Women To Be Honored On U.S. Quarters
The writer and poet Maya Angelou along with the first woman to ever fly into space, Sally Ride, will be the first women to appear on the US quarter. They will be part of a series that will be issued by the US mint over the next four years.
The “heads” side of the coin will still feature George Washington, but with a brand new design. The “tails” side of the will feature an image from the American Women Quarters Program which will start in January 2022.
According to BaltimoreSun.com, these quarters will feature 20 different women from a wide range of fields including science, art, civil rights and suffrage. The US mint asked people to submit suggestions for who they would like to see featured. The law still states however that no living person can be depicted on a design. To this day Susan B Anthony was the first woman to be featured on a US coin in circulation. The silver dollar was first released in 1979. There is also the Sacagawea dollar coin that was released from 2000 until 2008.
