What Makes A “Feel Good Movie?”
“Feel-good” movies tend to get backlash from critics, yet people still love to watch them! For the first time ever, researchers from Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics are analyzing what is “prototypical” about these feel good films and also which qualities contribute the most to that feel good effect.
The study looked at 450 participants and their collective responses made it clear romantic comedies were usually what people considered a “feel good movie.” They are funny, light-hearted, and of course have a happy ending. They also tend to be similar in plot points and even feature character archetypes we’ve seen time and time again.
The story line may focus on someone who is seen as an “outsider.” They could be on a search for love or self accomplishment. In order to prove themselves they’ll have to fight against unlikely circumstances. Though the movies are typically fun, there will still be an emotional moment that will have a lasting effect on the main character and also the audience. Some of the main films considered “feel good” include: Love Actually, Pretty Woman, and Amélie.
According to EurekAlert.com, while critics may not like them, audiences believe they are technically well done. These movies tend to be the best for people looking to relax and lift their own personal emotions.
