Restaurants Are Experiencing A Ketchup Shortage
There has been a shortage in ketchup caused by the pandemic. According to FoxNews.com, since January 2020 the price of ketchup has increased 13%. The main issue has been replacing the bottles of ketchup that could typically be shared across multiple tables at restaurants. Now, ketchup packets have to be used instead to decrease the spread of germs.
The CDC currently suggests that restaurants avoid using anything that has to be shared, which includes: menus, condiments, and just about anything else that would typically left at the table. Heinz, the most popular ketchup brand in America, says they simply can’t keep up with the demand for ketchup packets. With more people cooking from home in 2020, the sale of ketchup bottles also increased.
