For many of us our internet passwords may be one of the most difficult things to remember. Which is why we make the mistake of using the same password for multiple accounts. According to the Digital Guardian, the average email address is associated with 130 different accounts and 61% use the same password across those accounts. Here are five of the worst mistakes we make when it comes to our internet passwords:
- Using the same password everywhere - all it takes is someone getting your email password and then they have access to just about everything else. With access to your email address, anyone could simply hit "forgot my password" on a bank site and change your information.
- You never remember your password - by always needing to choose the "forgot my password" option you are wasting your time and productivity.
- You don't update passwords- if you never change your password there is no way to know if they have been breached. According to Yahoo.com, not only having a strong password is necessary, but also one that is frequently updated.
- Your passwords are too short - keeping it short so you can remember isn't always the best method. It's recommended you use a password that is at least 14 characters long.
- You keep the same security questions - WARNING* those online quizzes that ask for your birthdate or street address may be trying to find the answers to your security questions. The best way to answer these questions is with a WRONG answer you'll remember. For example, if you were to use the security question, "what's your mother's middle name", you can answer something related that doesn't directly answer. Make sure the question is something that only you would remember.
