Being honest about looks can really pay off, especially when it comes to produce. According to EurekAlert.com, labeling produce as “ugly” when you can obviously tell it has imperfections actually makes people more likely to buy it.
University of British Columbia researchers say because labeling something “ugly” points out the visual flaws of the product but also indications there are no other problems with it. The “ugly” label may also allow customers to reconsider their judgement that something is good based solely off its looks instead of its taste and other benefits.
Calling produce “ugly” online even increased the amount of times customers who clicked on the product. Research shows that these labels instead of words such as “imperfect” could actually decrease food waste in grocery stores.
