This past Sunday the Chicago Bears took on the New Orleans Saints in what might have been the most fun NFL playoff game of all time! The broadcast took place on Sunday, January 10th on Nickelodeon for the first time ever.
Your typical Sunday NFL broadcast was turned upside-down when the game began at 4:40pm. The usual graphics on the screen were all replaced with a new Nickelodeon orange and green aesthetic. The commentary for the broadcast eliminated all the usual complexities and focused on the fun of the game. Former NFL wide receiver Nate Burleson was in the booth breaking down the game in a simplistic way that was enjoyable for children and adults a like. There was one point during the game he described Drew Brees as, “the kid at recess who never missed at dodgeball.” He was joined by Nickelodeon stars that gave their own unique perception. There was even one point during the game when Alvin Kamara was compared to Alvin of Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Nick without slime! The end zones were turned into “slime zones” and first downs were also playfully stylized to look like they were dripping green slime. Another stand out detail from the broadcast was Young Sheldon, from the Big Bang Theory prequel, explained each play call for the audience.
The successful goal for both Nickelodeon and the NFL was to get kids more interested in football, in the process they showed the rest of us the game is better when it’s care-free and fun! Saints coach Sean Payton was even slimed at the end of the game when his team won.
