How Friday The 13th Could Have Gone Much Worse
While 2020 is full of surprises Earth certainly dodged a bullet on Friday, November 13th. According to nydailynew.com, an asteroid the size of a bus missed us by only 240 miles!
Experts hadn’t even noticed until the day after. The asteroid in orbit was estimated to be 16 to 33 foot wide and was about the same distance from Earth as the International Space Station. It actually skimmed the top part of our atmosphere. That makes it the closest asteroid to pass the Earth to this day!
At 30,014 miles per hour it soared past Earth over the South Pacific at 12:20PM EST, according to EarthSky.org. Astronomers do agree that if it had come closer to Earth’s surface all that would have likely happened was disintegration of the space rocks. It still could have been an interesting meteor shower even in the middle of the day.
