Spice Boom Leads To New Shortage
The pandemic has led to all kinds of drastic effects on the food industry. Ingredients can go from readily available to nearly impossible to find in what seems like overnight. Spices however, have been thriving through out the year. People have been more likely to cook and so their demand continues to increase. According to WashingtonPost.com, the manufacturers who make the glass and plastic containers for the spices are now struggling to keep up.
According to the NPD Group, all spices and other cooking seasonings were up over 50% in July. Now with the holidays coming they should be seeing even larger numbers. The highest increases were found during breakfast and lunch time, which typically were eaten away from home before the pandemic.
As desires to cook with spices are still increasing packaging facilities are hoping to keep up with the demand while also keeping their workers safe at the same time.
