Elon Musk Says NeuraLink Brain Implant Will Allow Owners to Telepathically Summon Their Tesla
Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, gave a presentation on a new futuristic piece of technology known as a NeuraLink brain implant. The NeurLink implant is a chip that is inserted into a human’s brain for the purpose of treating brain injuries, trauma, mental illness, memory loss, etc. This would one day become the connection between humans and artificial intelligence.
The implant has already been tested on at least 19 different animals with robots “around an 87% success rate” according to reports from CNBC. It has not yet been tested on humans, but is working towards that goal with the FDA.
NeuraLink was started in 2016 and is primarily funded by Elon Musk himself. Musk even said himself back in July 2019, that he hoped to see the implant in a real human patient by the end of 2020. He went on to say the process of “getting a Link” will not require general anesthesia and he hopes that a robot will “do the entire surgery” in about an hour. If done well, the surgery will only leave a tiny scar, and very minimal bleeding. The link is about the size of a large coin.
What Would The Chip Help?
NeuraLink is claiming the chip could restore limb function for paralysis patients, improve human movement, resolve issues with eyesight and hearing, and also help cure diseases like Parkinson’s. As of right now due to no human testing yet, these are all still claims made by the company.
Other claims have been made, stating it could also help with memory loss and Alzheimer’s, dementia, depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc.
Elon Musk Says Owners Could Telepathically Summon Their Tesla with NeuraLink
When asked the question from the audience panel, would a person be able to summon their Tesla telepathically, Musk immediately answered yes. He even followed up stating, it would be fairly easy.
Questions on the Rise…
After hearing the presentation and progress update, many people on social media voiced their concerns. Referring to robots taking over the world, the claims should be taken seriously. Many suggested, if someone could summon a car with just their thoughts, what happens when someone cuts me off and I get angry…will the car just rear end them? Or even worse, could NeuraLink control my thoughts and tell me what I like and don’t like, or what I do and don’t do.
It is something to be wary about, with only a 87 % success rate. It’s making people think, well if it fails, how severely is it damaging the person who has the implant?
One speculation is if Elon Musk could then force someone who has a NeuraLink but not a Tesla to go out and buy a Tesla, solely through their thoughts.
Chad Bouton, a vice president of advanced engineering at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, told CNBC by phone that there are safety concerns with any kind of invasive technology, including possible infections with any implant. He said “There will be ethical and safety issues to work through, and for a long time, it’s likely that you’ll have to have a real medical need to access this technology.”
