Nirvana is the main attraction at an upcoming Julien’s Auctions event with one lot potentially leading to a very intriguing addition to a memorabilia collection.
Lot 741 of Julien’s Auctions’ “Music Icons” event taking place June 19-20 contains the original negatives and camera used from Nirvana’s cover shoot from the January 1992 issue of Spin, which was shot by Greg Watermann.
Per the listing, included in the lot is “…the Hasselblad 500 ELX camera body used for the photoshoot, serial number 1330057; 34 original color slides from the shot, each numbered 1 to 34; 72 original black and white negatives in stripes of four, each with corresponding black and white contact sheets; various art prints in two sizes take from the original negatives, each signed ‘Watermann ’91,’ some with additional ‘Oct 22 Phoenix/Nirvana’ notations.”
The negatives from the lot are sold with their copyright and with copyright transfer documents signed by Watermann. However, Julien’s notes, “The buyer is solely responsible for obtaining copyrights.”
This lot is estimated to sell for between $10,000-20,0000, but don’t be surprised if it goes for more.
This auction is also where Kurt Cobain’s 1959 Martin D-18E Acoustic-Electric guitar, which he famously played on Nirvana’s episode of MTV Unplugged, will be sold. Julien’s Auctions is estimating the guitar to sell for $1 million.
