The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announces the first project related to the I-95 corridor rehabilitation project will begin in just a few days, Wednesday, April 15, 2020.
This project will remove the existing I-95 southbound on-ramps and existing bridge structures for the 2nd Street and Jackson Street ramps and build a new ramp configuration for access to I-95 southbound. Additional left-turn lanes will also be added on Lancaster Avenue to Adams Street and 2nd Street to the newly reconfigured on-ramp.
Ramps such as the 2nd Street on-ramp to I-95 southbound will close on Saturday, May 2, 2020, and will remain closed for the duration of the project. In the future, the Jackson Street on-ramp to I-95 southbound will close in August 2020.
There will be nighttime intermittent lane closures from 8:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. Sunday to Friday, and road closures during certain phases of this construction. Traffic alerts and variable message boards will be posted to alert motorists of scheduled road closures.
This project is estimated to be completed by the end of 2020.
What’s To Come…
The Delaware Department of Transportation has released a full plan to revamp the existing six mile section of Interstate 95 that passes through Wilmington. This project in whole is estimated to take 3 years and is necessary to keep the Interstate from deterioration.
The highest priority bridges are ranked on the 2017 DelDOT Bridge Deficiency List (out of 1625 total bridges) as follows: Bridge 1 -748 is ranked 146th, Bridge 1 -748N is ranked 59th, Bridge 1 -748S is ranked 94th, and Bridge 1 -759 is ranked 99th. By rehabilitating these bridges, the Department will be improving its data associated with meeting the performance measures associated with bridge condition, specifically percentage of bridges in poor or fair condition and percentage of deck area in poor condition for bridges on the NHS.
