Taylor Swift’s ‘The Man’ Video: Easter Eggs, Manspreading, And Male Chauvinism
After much anticipation, Taylor Swift’s “The Man” music video is out. In the self-directed video, Taylor dresses as “the man,” and it shows her – or him – constantly throwing tantrums, manspreading on the subway, peeing on walls, surrounded by multiple models, and being an overall jerk. The end of the video shows Taylor coming out of the director’s chair and telling the character in the video to be “be sexier, maybe more likable” on the next take.
There are also quite a few Easter eggs in the clip:
When the man is peeing on the wall, all of her album names are written on it, and there are two signs: one says, “Missing: If found return to Taylor Swift.” The other is a “no Scooter” sign. This is a reference to her drama with her former label and Scooter Braun.
There is a poster of Mr. Americana Tyler Swift, which will premiere at the “Mandance” festival
The subway station is called “13th Street Station.” 13 is Taylor’s favorite number.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is the voice of “the man” at the end
Taylor’s dad is the umpire during the tennis match
When “the man” is yelling at the umpire, it is similar to when Serena Williams yelled at the referee during the 2018 US Open Final.
The hallway scene had 19 hands, which fans think references the 19th Amendment of the US Constitution.
TikTok star Loren Gray has a cameo.
Taylor also had a Q&A before the premiere of the video. Per E! News, she replied to fans’ comments on YouTube and opened up about the process of creating the video, the Easter eggs that are hidden everywhere, and teased the actor that was playing “the man.”
