‘Smart’ Trash Bins are Coming to Wilmington!
You’ve heard of the smart phone, even the smart watch, but have you heard of the smart trash bin? The new technology is coming to Wilmington.
Wilmington’s new trash bins are coming equipped with GPS trackers. City officials say the smart technology will allow the public works department to track garbage collection in real time. The city also wants to make data available so residents can track where the garbage trucks are. The new technology will also put a cap on resident’s trash. Trash can only go in the 65 gallon cans, and not in bags on the street. Trash that exceeds the can will not be collected. This way, residents are encouraged to recycle as much as possible. The goal is to reduce residential trash by 20%. Over the next five years, the city is paying more than 330,000 per year for the new bins and software. IF the goal of reducing residential trash is reached, the city would save $274,000 in landfill fees. The new smart cans are being delivered to households citywide this week!
