When Munira Abdulla went into a coma from a car accident she was 32 years old and it was 1991. Roughly 27 years later, and nearly half of her life, Abdulla has woken up from her coma. Doctors did not expect her to fully wake up saying she would “never be able to open her eyes again and had a severe brain injury”. Her son Omar, who was four at the time of the crash, was excited for his mother to wake. “She was calling my name. I was flying with joy. For years I have dreamt of this moment, and my name was the first word she said,” Omar said.
