Laura Gendreau, Program Manager of Kiss Your Landlord Goodbye, discussed Stand By Me, a joint project of the State of Delaware, the United Way of Delaware and other service providers and lending institutions. The project teaches financial literacy, fraud prevention and enables families to plan for college, home ownership and retirement. Stand by Me offers free one-on-one support or workshops for residents who want to get a handle on their finances, including clearing or repairing their credit rating, discovering unclaimed pensions or benefits, learning to save and how to bank. Ms. Gendreau’s program, Kiss Your Landlord Goodbye, in association with the state’s Housing Department, works with residents to help them qualify for home mortgages and teaches them the planning to retain the home after the purchase. She also discussed fraud against seniors and the banking and financial issues for non-English speaking or non-permanent residents, as well as people with disabilities.
