St. Patrick’s Day Society
The St. Patrick’s Day Society Committee, an all-volunteer committee, now in its 19th year, organizes two large events each year to encourage thoughtful celebration of their proud Irish heritage while supporting the St. Patrick’s Senior Center.
The St. Patrick’s Center, in partnership with the Parish on King Street in Wilmington, provides services, programs, and support to the area’s seniors. The Center has an ongoing challenge — to sponsor Nutritional, Social Service, Transportation, Clothing, Recreational and Empowerment programs. With the help of a small network of supporters, St. Patrick’s Center has become key among the organizations that provide vital services particularly to the East side of Wilmington. At the Center, friends gather in a secure, friendly environment. The center’s outreach programs include helping those in need of assistance, in accessing healthcare, filing taxes, dealing with Social Security, or securing food stamps. The Center maintains a clothing and food outlet for families as well.
The Society will hold its first major fundraising event of year on Friday, November 11th at noon with the Father Jim Trainor Memorial Scholarship Luncheon at the Chase Center on the Riverfront. The Trainor Scholarship, in Memory of the beloved Fr. Trainor who focused his ministry to helping those in need in Wilmington. The Scholarship benefits outstanding Wilmington 8th graders who would like to continue their education at a Catholic high school. This year’s luncheon will feature St. Francis Hospital’s Dr. Katherine Sahm. Dr. Sahm is a native Delawarean and graduate of Immaculate Heart of Mary and Archmere Academy—to which she credits much of her success. She played volleyball at Lafayette College and went on to graduate from Jefferson Medical College. In her fourth year of med school, Sahm joined the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps, serving a tour in Iraq in 2009.
