Stuff the Van

The Delaware SPCA – Georgetown Shelter will hold a “Stuff the Van” event December 4, 2011 at Concord Pets in Rehoboth Beach. Concord Pets will be holding their annual sale the same day. An SPCA van will be on-hand to collect items donated to the animals of the Georgetown Shelter. The event’s goal is to stuff the van to capacity with bags of food, toys, beds and other pet supplies. Today, Delaware SPCA operates two shelters, one in New Castle and one in Sussex Counties. The Georgetown shelter is the ONLY animal shelter serving Sussex County residents, providing cruelty prevention and law enforcement, adoption services, low-cost vaccination clinics, and affordable spay/neuter services in its newly expanded clinic. In 2008, under new leadership, the Delaware SPCA underwent an organizational transformation, reducing euthanasia by 90% and improving the care of shelter animals. A policy was adopted whereby only animals that are too ill or injured to recover, or are a danger to the public are euthanized. All animals with treatable illnesses receive the veterinary care necessary to get them well, and many older animals have been welcomed into our shelters and placed in loving homes. With more animals being cared for than ever before, the Georgetown Shelter greatly benefits from every donation that is made and this event will assist the shelter in furthering their efforts. The Delaware SPCA does not receive any state or county funding and is not associated with any national organizations or other SPCA. The services provided by the SPCA are only possible with the charitable support of the community. “Stuff the Van” will take place on December 4, 2011 from 8 a.m to 6 p.m at Concord Pets in Rehoboth Beach. For additional information, call 302-856.6361 or visit

Kalmar Nyckle Traning

Kalmar Nyckel, Tall Ship of Delaware, recruits new volunteer crew The public is invited to join Class 28. This January, the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation begins its 15th year of training new volunteers to sail this venerable icon of Delaware. There’s no sailing experience required to join this community of people ages 18 and up (or 14-17 with a parent/guardian). Kalmar Nyckel sails with the help of hundreds of volunteers who perform dozens of tasks on the re-created 1638 vessel. “Those who join me for the 11 week class will learn to sail this magnificent tall ship, including how to tie knots, safely handle lines and set square-rigged sails the way it was done 375 years ago,” says Captain Sharon, Kalmar Nyckel’s Port Captain. Once trained, the volunteers are able to crew Kalmar Nyckel on day trips or weeks-long adventures up and down the East Coast. They can also help support the ship with land-based work in Wilmington. Classes begin January 14, 2012 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. for 11 Saturdays through April 14. There’s a $50 materials fee and a $35 drug testing fee (test required by the Coast Guard). After the class is successfully completed, 40 hours of volunteer work are required prior to sailing. Pre-Register for the crew training class on-line at Get more information or register at 429-7447 or or show up on the first day of class with a picture ID and warm clothes. Kalmar Nyckel is an authentic re-creation of a 17th-century Dutch vessel, one of America’s pioneering “Tall Ships” that brought some of the earliest permanent settlers to the colonies. Her historical significance mirrors that of the Mayflower. The original Kalmar Nyckel sailed from Sweden to the New World in 1638, leaving her passengers to establish the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley, at Fort Christina in present-day Wilmington, Delaware. Tours of the Kalmar Nyckel shipyard on the Christina River at 1124 E. Seventh Street, Wilmington, are available weekends 10 a.m.-4 p.m. now through mid-April. The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation preserves and promotes the cultural and maritime heritage of Delaware for the education and enrichment of all

Free Legal Advice for Seniors

New Delaware Senior Legal Hotline Will Help Older Delawareans Get Free Advice and Ensure Their Rights NEW CASTLE (Dec. 15, 2011) – Through the new Delaware Senior Legal Hotline, Delawareans 60 and older can receive free legal advice on a variety of issues. Advice will be provided by either a Delaware Volunteer Legal Services staff attorney or volunteer attorneys. If the issue requires more than advice, the caller will be screened for free legal services and, if eligible, will be referred to Community Legal Aid Society (CLASI), Delaware Volunteer Legal Services (DVLS) or the Legal Services Corporation of Delaware (LSCD). There are no income requirements for the hotline. The Delaware Senior Legal Hotline -- (302) 478-8850 in New Castle County and (800) 773-0606 in Kent and Sussex counties – is available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. “With our increasingly complex world, it’s important that Delaware’s seniors have a trusted and free resource like the hotline to turn to whenever the need for legal advice arises,” Gov. Jack Markell said. “Whether the issue involves housing, health care or finances, our older residents should be reassured that help is just a phone call away.” As Delaware’s older population continues to grow, Department of Health and Social Services Secretary Rita Landgraf said the Delaware Senior Legal Hotline will be an increasingly valuable resource. “The hotline will assist older Delawareans in accessing quality legal services to ensure their rights and financial security,” Landgraf said. “The ability to call the hotline and get answers to legal questions before a crisis arises will benefit many of our older citizens.” In 2010, the Division of Services for Aging & Adults with Physical Disabilities, in partnership with Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. (CLASI), Delaware Volunteer Legal Services (DVLS) and Delaware Helpline (211), was awarded a three-year Model Approaches to Statewide Legal Assistance grant through the U.S. Administration on Aging. As part of the grant, a “Legal Handbook for Older Delawareans” was printed, a legal needs assessment of older Delawareans was conducted and the Senior Legal Hotline was developed and implemented. The Delaware Senior Legal Hotline -- (302) 478-8850 in New Castle County and (800) 773-0606 in Kent and Sussex counties – is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. For more information about the hotline, call Denise Weeks-Tappan, planning supervisor in the state Division of Services for Aging & Adults with Physical Disabilities, at (302) 255-9390.
