White Cane Day

On Tuesday, Oct. 18, Delaware will mark White Cane Day by thanking a local private employer for working with the Division for the Visually Impaired to hire visually impaired consumers. The state’s job placement of individuals who are visually impaired has increased each of the previous three years, but demand also is increasing. The division is seeking more employers, such as Delaware Park, to create training and employment opportunities. Delaware Park employs two people, Linda Reiker and Joseph Hayes, with visual impairments. “We are very fortunate to have employers like Delaware Park who recognize the value of hiring visually impaired citizens,” said Robert Doyle III, director of the state Division for the Visually Impaired. “National data shows that the unemployment rate of the blind far exceeds that of the general population. We are using this White Cane Day as an invitation to other Delaware employers -- private, nonprofit and state -- to partner with us to employ persons with visual disabilities.” During a brief ceremony at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the first floor of Delaware Park’s clubhouse, Doyle and Department of Health and Social Services Secretary Rita Landgraf will thank Delaware Park for its involvement with the program, and talk about the increasing need for placements across the state, and remind employers and citizens of Delaware’s White Cane Law. Delaware Park General Manager Andrew Gentile and Senior Vice President of Human Resources Nancy Myshko also will attend the event. Reiker and Hayes will be able for interviews. Delaware’s White Cane Law says individuals who are blind, visually impaired or have physical disabilities shall be employed on the same terms and conditions as are people without such disabilities unless it is shown that the particular disability prevents the performance of the work involved. “Our experience has shown that persons with vision loss prove to be hard working, committed and dedicated employees who perform on an equal footing with their sighted co-workers given the range of technology and adaptive equipment available today,” Doyle said. For more information about the Delaware Division for the Visually Impaired or its job placement program, contact communications/outreach coordinator Jack Holloway at (302) 255-9821.

Hauntings in History: Ghostly Walking Tours of Old New Castle

Come join us in Old New Castle for our annual Ghost Tours…but only if you dare! Beware of goblins, ghosts and poltergeists as you venture out on autumn evenings and discover the darker side of history by taking the only ghost tour of Old New Castle that brings you inside one of New Castle’s most haunted mansions. Tours begin by exploring the Amstel House, where you may glimpse the famous “Lady in Blue”, who is said to have appeared to many people over several decades. You will visit the bedchamber and walk on the staircase where apparitions have most frequently been reported while listening to stories of staff members who have also seen shadows and felt the eerie presence. Once you explore the Amstel House, and decide for yourself who the “Lady in Blue” is, you’ll venture out into the dark, cool night to search for other New Castle myths and tales of the supernatural. Mixed in along with the stories will be plenty of New Castle history – including mourning customs of the time, funerary practices and the history of capitol punishment. Hauntings in History tours are scheduled to begin at 7:00, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. on October 21, 22, 28 and 29. Tours are held rain or shine and last approximately 75 minutes. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children under 12. These tours sell out quickly so call the Society today at (302) 322-2794 and make your reservations! DNREC’s Scrap Tire Drop-Off Day

DNREC will host its next Scrap Tire Drop-Off Day recycling event for Delaware residents Saturday, Oct. 22, at DelDOT’s Laurel Maintenance Yard from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. The drop-off days give Delawareans the opportunity to recycle scrap tires free of charge and also help reduce the environmental and health hazards associated with scrap tires in our communities. Delaware’s Scrap Tire Management Program was created to eliminate large, unsightly scrap tire piles that can spawn fires resulting in toxic smoke along with an oily liquid runoff from melted tires that can potentially pollute groundwater. In addition, tire piles provide the ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can carry the West Nile virus. Residents are invited to bring up to 10 passenger or light duty truck tires per household during this event. Larger tires or tires on rims will not be accepted. Each person dropping off tires should be prepared to show proof of Delaware residency with either a driver’s license or utility bill. DelDOT’s Laurel Yard is located at 10930 Salt Barn Road, Laurel, DE 19956. The Delaware Scrap Tire Management Program, enacted on January 1, 2007, is funded by a state fee of $2 per tire on the sale of new tires. The fee is diverted to the Scrap Tire Management Fund, a matching fund and program created to clean up existing scrap tire piles statewide. For more information on the program and future scrap tire drop-off events, visit DNREC’s website, www.awm.delaware.gov/Info/Pages/ScrapTire.aspx, or contact the Scrap Tire Management Program at 302-739-9403.

Twenty-five Delaware artisans will exhibit and sell their wares on Sunday, October 23 from 12 noon until 5 p.m. at the Delaware Wine & Beer Festival on the grounds of Pizzadili Winery & Vineyards, 1683 Peach Basket Road in Felton. The Delaware Artisan Faire is sponsored by Angelucci Gallery and Artists' Studios in Milford. The gallery is located at 7 Park Avenue in Milford and features 30 local and regional artists who make pottery, jewelry, fine art, prints, photography, handcrafted jewelry and handcrafted baskets. Five artisans from Angelucci will round out the event, including Scott Angelucci, fine woodworking, and his wife Gail, custom stained glass artist. Mr. Angelucci specializes in reproduction and one-of-a-kind pieces. Furniture and built-ins are hand crafted using traditional joinery. He also crafts special molding and millwork in a large variety of woods. Mrs. Angelucci's stained glass is designed and created by commission. Each piece of glass is carefully hand-selected to assure a perfect end result. Additional artisans who will represent the Gallery include ceramicist Marie Sadler; Pane in the Glass dichroic glass jewelry by Jan Brunory, Val Dellas and Judy Phillips; mixed media artist Randy Strader and Cassie Lawn Walker, surrealist artist. "We are pleased with the number and quality of artisans for this year's event," said Lorraine Dion, Director of Special Events and Public Relations for Kent County Tourism, producer of the event. "Pairing Delaware-made art with Delaware wines and beers is a natural combination, plus the Faire provides a great opportunity to purchase gifts in time for the holiday gift-giving season," she said. Twenty additional artisans will feature fiber arts, prints and original art, primitive painting, photography, hand-painted glassware, jewelry, note cards and more. For more information about Angelucci Gallery and Artists' Studios, call 302-422-4533. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Delaware’s Division of Public Health (DPH) and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will help the public properly dispose of expired, unused and unwanted medication on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, Saturday, Oct. 29. Delawareans can bring medications for disposal to any of the 28 collection sites throughout the state from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is free and anonymous—no questions asked. According to the DEA, 3,398 pounds of unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications were collected in Delaware at the last event, held April 30. National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day addresses a vital public health and safety issue. Flushing medicines down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose potential safety, environmental and health hazards. Traces of medical hormones, antidepressants, antibiotics and other drugs have been detected in Delaware’s drinking water. In addition, medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to misuse and abuse. “I urge Delawareans to look in their medicine cabinets and take any unused medications to one of these drop-off sites," said Governor Jack Markell. “We can do our part to keep drugs out of the hands of those who might abuse them and help our environment by properly disposing of drugs we don't need." More than 7 million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs in the U.S., according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Each day, approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a collaborative effort between DPH’s Office of Healthy Environments and 41 partners statewide including the Governor’s Office, DNREC’s Environmental Crimes Unit, Delaware State Police, Delaware Attorney General’s Office, Delaware Department of Justice Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the Office of Controlled Substances and other municipalities, law enforcement agencies and community groups.
